The system comes with all standard modules and functions with lots more available to download and install to add further functionality to the basic site. You can also customise the look and feel of the default site and/or download themes from a variety of suppliers. Elgg is an open source application which has many of the features of commercial systems, but at a fraction of the cost. It includes:
- activity stream and notifications to keep track of what your connections are currently doing;
- profiles for site members to build up an online presence;
- groups, for like minded people to form separate discussion areas;
- blogs to allow the creation of dynamic online content in addition to discussions;
- the ability to upload, embed and share files;
